Nelson E. Sell

Nelson E. Sell, 83, of Claysburg, passed away Wednesday May 24, 2023 at The Village at Morrisons Cove. He was born, on December 31, 1939 at his home in Sproul, weighing nearly 13 pounds, attended by his maternal grandmother, who had 15 children. He was the son of the late Nelson B. “Yocky” and Ruth S. (Grasser) Sell. He married Ellen Colebaugh on December 23, 1960 in Claysburg.

Surviving is his wife of 62 years, 4 children Dawn, Jeffrey, Daniel (Jennifer) and Nicole (fiancé Ray), 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren a sister Jane Decker, a brother Donald (Peggy) Sell, 5 nieces and 3 nephews.

Nelson was a 1957 graduate of Greenfield-Kimmel High School. He later graduated from Indiana State College and went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Education.

Mr. Sell retired as a Social Studies teacher in 1998 from the Altoona Area High School after 36 years of service. He also served as President of the Teacher’s Union, where he helped establish their Credit Union, and, also taught summer classes at Penn State - Altoona Campus.

Nelson was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Claysburg and Pennsylvania State Education Association-Retired. After retirement, he enjoyed gardening and wood working in his shop and playing with his grandchildren.

Friends will be received from noon until the 3:00 P.M. funeral service on Tuesday May 30, 2023 at the Leslie-Miller Funeral Home, Claysburg. Interment at Claysburg Union Cemetery.
